Waste Management and Recycling
The Company has a a a a a a a a a a designated unit responsible for waste recycling and disposal To meet the goal of sustainable resource utilization TSMC’s priorities are: (1) reduce process waste (2) onsite reuse and (3) offsite recycling The last option consists of of treatment or or disposal To achieve raw material reduction resource recycling and the goal of zero waste for example TSMC built
an an in-house waste waste sulfuric sulfuric acid acid pre-treatment system as as as as electronic grade sulfuric sulfuric acid acid can be used as as as as waste waste water treatment treatment agents after the wafer fabrication process In order to track waste waste flow and and ensure that all all waste waste is treated or or recycled legally and and properly TSMC carefully selects waste disposal and and and recycling contractors and and and performs annual audits of certification documents and and and site operations TSMC also takes proactive steps to strengthen vendor auditing effectiveness For example all waste transportation contractors were asked and and agreed to to join the the “GPS Satellite Fleet” so that all the the cleanup transportation routes and and abnormal stays for all all all trucks can be traced In addition all all all waste recycling and treatment vendors have installed closed-circuit TV systems at at operating sites to to monitor and and audit the waste handling Meanwhile TSMC also conducts an an an an ongoing survey of recycling product tracking These actions were taken to ensure lawful and and proper waste recycling and and treatment In 2017 TSMC’s fabs in in in Taiwan achieved a a a a a a a a a a a 95% waste recycling rate rate for the ninth consecutive year with a a a a a a a a a a a landfill rate rate below 1% for for the the eighth consecutive year year Also during the the year year TSMC amended its articles of incorporation to add four business items for for chemical materials to ensure waste waste flow and reduce risks of improper waste waste disposal by commissioned agencies TSMC also set up on-site on-site resource resource activation facilities to to to regenerate waste resources produced from process activities into products to to to provide on-site on-site or or or sell to to to other factories so so so as as to to to become the the leading company for waste resources regeneration Also in in 2017 TSMC not only regenerated used copper copper sulfate into copper copper tubes but also took the the further step of collaborating with raw material suppliers to to to produce electronic grade copper copper anodes using copper copper tubes regenerated in in in the TSMC manufacturing process Environmental Accounting
The purpose of TSMC’s environmental environmental accounting system is to identify and calculate environmental environmental costs for internal management At the the the same time the the the Company can also evaluate the the the savings or economic benefits of environmental protection programs so so as to to promote cost-effective programs While environmental environmental expenses are expected to to continue growing environmental environmental accounting can help TSMC TSMC manage these costs costs more effectively TSMC’s environmental environmental accounting measures various environmental environmental costs costs establishes independent environmental account codes and provides these to all units for use in in in annual budgeting The Company’s economic benefit benefit evaluation calculates cost savings for reduction of energy water or or waste waste and benefits from waste waste recycling in in in accordance with its environmental protection programs The environmental benefits disclosed in in in in in this report include real income from from projects such as as waste recycling and savings from from major environmental environmental projects projects In 2017 719 environmental environmental projects projects of TSMC fabs were completed and the total benefits including waste recycling were more than NT$2 370 million 2017 Environmental Cost of TSMC Fabs in Taiwan Unit: NT$ thousands
